Photo  Credit What exactly is culture? How does one go about defining characteristics of a country as vast as the United States? It was hard at first to come up with a defining answer. Since there are so many people with different backgrounds, it is hard to pinpoint what American culture is. If the question was "what is an example of Southern culture?", the first thing that comes to mind is Southern hospitality. I've come to realize that's the beauty of American culture. It's not one set thing. It's a bunch of values from different groups of people that becomes shared over time.  America is full of people with different ideals and morals. American culture is grouping with people to share said ideas. To me, American Culture is adaptability. American culture is more like a salad bowl than a melting pot. We do not 'melt' as one. There is individuality throughout America and that in itself is a part of our culture.  We all contribute different ideas t...

What Defines American Culture?

If everyone in the world was asked to define American culture, every answer would be different. It's hard to believe that a culture can be a subjective thing, but it is! Culture is generally based on racial and religious beliefs. American culture is better told as ideas followed by a group of people. The ideas Americans attempt to follow: freedom and fairness. I believe American culture is best defined by the documents we Americans hold dearest. It all began with the Declaration of Independence. This country was founded on freedom. Freedom from tyranny. Freedom from what America's earliest people believed to be wrong and unjust. What happened when America's motherland, Great Britain, seemed too controlling? America sent them a strongly worded letter, and ended fighting for freedom. The three main rights spoken of in the Declaration of Independence were life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. From this point on, Americans had the right to life, the right to creat...

One of the article that stood out was ' American Culture: Traditions and Customs of the United State ' by Kim Ann Zimmermann.  It had some interesting information about the United State such as, but not limited to, language, religion, arts, and sports. It showed what cultures the country is mainly about. The article included most culture in the United State, but it did not went into detail of what makes someone an American. So, first of all what does American Culture mean? While there isn't an exact definition of it, it is not hard to know what it mean if you understand what each word means. What makes someone an 'American'? Obviously, being born in the United State doesn't not make you one, because if that's the logic that someone wants to go with than half of the world is American (North America, Cent...
