No Lights. Now What?

Take a moment to think about the world you live in today. What are some of the common issues that come to mind? You may ponder the idea of ending world hunger, or perhaps ending poverty. The solutions to both of these issues have one thing in common; an insight on the future of humanity. Although ending issues like these are quite relevant, there is another issue that, if no solution is found quickly, could result in no future for humanity. That problem involves the sustainable consumption and production of energy. Before you click off of this blog because of the seeming uninteresting topic of finding a new source of energy, take into account the current issues we face with energy. As of right now, there is no solution concerning the burning of oil as a means of transportation. Oil is a nonrenewable resource , meaning that once it is used, it can no longer be reused, producing waste.  Generally, we are well aware that such resources are nonrenewable and we also know that we...

Mental Health Stigma

By: Alexandra Tantoco  It's unfortunate but not surprising to note that, over 7.5 million (17% ) of Americans dealing with mental illnesses remain uninsured. " The rate of serious psychological distress increases with lower levels of income ", which was stated by The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health. Knowing that mental illness can run rampant regardless of economic status, but is heavily increased in those struggling financially is quite unfortunate. It's either individuals are uninsured, their insurance does not cover the mental health spectrum, or the stigma around having a mental disorder prevents individuals from seeking help and guidance. This is increasingly striking in communities of color because of the stigma POC get from their communities and most directly, from their family members. " Half of all Americans will develop a form of mental illness during their lifetime... but minorities are more likely to g...

Technology: How It Can Be a Bit Excessive

Technology today plays an important role in society, especially in today's youth. In today's society and culture, technology has been inserted and prioritized. Cell phones today have evolved immensely than phones from the past. Today, cell phones serve a higher purpose than just calling. More forms of technology are being made to make lives easier, and if it continues then people will only rely on technology to perform basic tasks.        In an article published by BBC , it is stated that, " the more complex the global infrastructure needed to support the most basic tools and services in our lives, the more vulnerable it becomes to unexpected crises...and the more vulnerable we become alongside it ." We become so reliant on new technology because we think that it saves us time and energy but all it does is cause more damage to us as a society. We rely so much on this technology that it essentially makes us helpless and panic when i...

The Fast and the Furious

Old vs New Cars VROOOOOOM. BEEP BEEP. That’s what you will hear in every single city in the United States. Personal life and professional life can be frantic, especially if you don’t own your own personal transportation. Getting to one destination to another has never been convenient and easier than before [except if you are stuck in traffic].  Owning a car can make someone more independent because they don’t rely on others for a ride. Although, cars are a negative impact of owning/ using a car, the positive impact of using a car over rank the negative rank. According to an article called “The Pros and Cons of Traveling by Car” , it mentions some good and bad impacts of using a car and explaining why. One of the things that mentioned was the flexibility of owning and using a car. You decided where to start, how fast or slow, and putting items (such as suitcases, etc.). There’s a lot of things that car can do, but how did it start? In an article called “Automobi...

The Issue With Capital Punishment and False Convictions

By: Allison Miles Capital punishment tends to be a topic individuals avoid conversing and sharing their opinions about, and for fairly good reasons. Others who do not feel comfortable with this subject may feel defensive, awkward, or even offended at the mention of the death penalty. Though this should only be brought up at appropriate times in conversation, if society speaks more about this issue than they do currently, there could easily be a change in state laws, and treatment of convicted individuals. The man who set off the homemade bombs during the Boston marathon in April 2013, Dzhokar Tsarnaev, was sentenced to death on December 8th, 2017. Tsarnaev's sentence had gone against the wishes of multiple victims and their family members, and though he pleaded not guilty to his crimes, his lawyer Judy Clarke was not hiding the fact that he had involvement in the attack. However, at least 4.1 percent of United States capital punishment sentences in the modern era are wron...

Counterculture in America

Image
Counterculture Movement An American counterculture is a group of people who live a lifestyle that does not essentially fit into the norm of mainstream society. In a sense they can be seen as outsiders going against what is typical of American traditions. The main goal or purpose of countercultures are to change or have an effect on mainstream cultures. Examples of groups that participate in this are feminist, polygamist, hippies, etc. There are other subcultures in America who also have the intention of, in some way, changing mainstream culture. The difference is that those subcultures, unlike countercultures, prefer to keep in the background and not bring any attention to themselves. A majority of countercultures prefer to have attention on them so that their lifestyle or their idea is well acknowledged and noticed throughout society. This can most commonly be done by holding strikes, protests, movements, etc. Unfortunately, it is impossible to get the good effects that...

There are many different counter cultures in the United States. Many different groups of individuals a big one is hippies. Hippies are very popular and there are still quite a few people who want to be one to this day, 2018. More big movements were green movement, polygamists, and feminist groups. The green movement is basically the environmental movement so conserving energy, everything green green green, even green politics. Basically, in that time there were conventional social norms back in the 1950's. The youth did reje...
