A Right to Bear Arms

Gun ownership has always been a strange concept to me, why would people want to own weapons that have the ability to take someone's life? I wondered this for quite some time until I thought to myself, maybe I should approach this topic through the point of view of the gun owning people.
In a research done by the Pew Research Center, several American citizens were asked about the reason they owned guns. According to the results, 67% of gun owners say that the reason they own a gun is for protection. This result seems like common knowledge, of course protection would the major reason for owning a gun. Another reason they mentioned in the study was because they grew up in a household where a gun was owned.
If one were to dive into the subject to the point of view of gun owning Americans, one could see the reason of why owning a gun seems important. Guns can be used to protect their families or property. Guns can also be a treasure passed down from generation to generation. And to those who feel like owning a gun seems dangerous, they should try to put themselves in the other side's shoes.

  1. How many people were interviewed in that Pew Research study? So what you've found so far is that people own guns often because they grew up around guns or feel that they need them for home protection. Then I wonder if you could add data/detail that explore guns used for safety: protection against home invasion, or for conceal carry purposes. What does that data show? How safe are those who use their guns? And what *kind* of gun is really needed for these types of protection? Can one still support gun ownership and want to restrict the types of guns on the open market?

  2. I also did the topic of the right to bear arms and really appreciate the fact that you added statistic to justify the point that you stated. However, I feel as if it would have been more beneficial if you also added in that number of people that where interviewed as well as maybe there reason why they felt that way if it was provided. Was there any other research done on this topic that you could have also provided?

  3. After reading your post I grew interested in the psychological backgrounds of gun owners. Under normal circumstances it is safe to assume that a person will purchase a gun, based on the logic that there're other people that own weaponry. But to think that there has been evidence of gun owners purchasing firearms under simple premises, "They grew up in a household where a gun was owned," is interesting and how do they dictate to their children the importance of owning a gun.
