Counterculture
American societies have always had individuals who oppose "the norm." This group of people will go against or not fit-in to the mainstream culture, which is the simple definition of counterculture. It can also be described as a cultural or political movement that wants change. Their purpose is basically to make counterculture the new and improved mainstream. This group does not believe they can live among the 'main-streamers.' While this counterculture was going against the conformity and exploitation, it sparked more artists, activists, and movements.
A few examples of today's age countercultures are the goths, emos, punks, skaters, etc. They obviously don't want to fall behind the mainstream culture. They like their rogue-ish lifestyle. In my opinion though, they are not a true definition of a counterculture. Again, their purpose is to make counterculture the new mainstream. This group isn't exactly putting effort into improving anything.
Better examples of counterculture would be the movement of the 1960's and 50's. Most people are familiar of these hard times and they just wanted peace. In the 60's they rejected war with a passion and valued love among all. As this counterculture explored other options, they had access to drugs like LSD to take them to a substitute state of mind. This time would go hand-in-hand with the Civil Rights Movement that began in the 1950's. Martin Luther King gave his "I Have A Dream" speech in which demanded the desegregation of schools, federal action to bar racial discrimination during the employment process, and many more issues that were mainstream at the time.
Today, there are still many issues that I know many of us would like to change. I do believe that now is more favorable than the times before us. There will never be peace and content in the US or the World for that matter, that is why there lives counterculture and it's not always a bad thing to have among us.

I really like the topic you picked, I also did my blog on counter culture as well. You have very good examples about counterculture, it was good to read your point of view of this topic. There is many issues still occurring today and we all would like to change. I agree where you said, "There will never be peace and content in the U.S. or the world for that matter , that is why there lives counterculture and it's not always a bad thing to have among us." I really agreed with what you had to say in this post. Great work!

Taylor,
ReplyDeleteCounter culture is a very interesting topic! The information provided is detailed very well. I also agree that there are things occurring in the world that we would like to change. Did you use any research for this blog? I agree, no matter how hard we try there will never be any peace in the United States or world. Here is a link about subcultures and countercultures. I like that you used Martin Luther King "I Have a Dream" speech as an example for the experiment of the countercultures.
