Gun Culture

There is many events happening in the world today regarding guns. I am personally not for it, even though when I was younger my dad had them in the house since he was in the military. There is way too many things happening in the world involving guns and or a weapon of some kind. There is also many events happening recently, especially about school shootings and that is not okay. People should feel safe but many individuals do not feel safe anymore. Many people don't even feel safe when going to different places because there has been many events on the news about shootings at a fast food restaurant, or even a gas station etc.

There were about 17 students killed in Parkland, Florida a couple weeks back, which was heart breaking. Voters are trying to start punishing their elected officials for inaction on legislation that might make such incidents (shootings) less likely to happen or less frequently. Students that attend schools to this day don't feel safe attending their school and a lot of students are likely to take online classes because they feel safer. Many schools have had meetings recently about getting more security in the buildings perhaps like airport security, where you have to go through the machines and they scan you to see if you have any sort of weapons on you or not. It is very sad that schools have to come to conclusions of thinking about installing this but it is for the safety of the students at each school. Also, a major deal being talked about recently is teachers with guns now, so incase anything happens they have protection, but a lot of parents and individuals are not for it and don't feel safe with teachers having that and their kids going to school knowing their teacher has a gun. So a lot of talk is going on regarding the situation.

There is a lot of problems Americans face on guns, that would be difficult to address, and which does defy legislation, and that's the cultural side of this. It has been stated, "I am more confident than ever that America has a bigger problem with gun culture than it has with guns themselves." says Andrew Exum. Many individuals think of a lot of issues that comes with gun culture. There is always arguments with people who talk about gun culture. There are times as well of course when people always feel they are right, or always want to be right in certain situations like this. According to Exum, Veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the wars have in fact found such weaponry insane.

He also says, "The military itself arms teenagers with such weapons , but only after careful selection and intensive training." Many have said changing culture is and it is hard when the gun manufacturers it serves have vested interest in convincing Americans to purchase more firearms. After all being said, there is just many things occurring in the world today, and some Americans need to realize it isn't all about guns, it should be about everyone being protected and safe. Especially, with what is going on today with schools, school shootings are no joke and is very serious, the safety of children is very important. At the end of the day, guns are not important, individuals are and people around them.

  1. This is interesting--what are the particular laws in Florida, at least, that could be changed that would have helped Parkland students? Would it be a ban on AR-15-type weapons? High-capacity magazines? Something else? Here's a place that I think you can continue to "believe" those who desire to keep their guns. Perhaps explore the 2nd Amendment and the amendment historically. What did the founders really *mean* when they wrote the Amendment? What do you think of recent appellate court rulings that say municipalities can ban assault rifles (see http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-assault-weapons-ban-massachusetts-20180406-story.html)? Where is the middle ground that would perhaps make students safer?
As someone who just went through airport security this week, is it financially feasible to have TSA-style security at high schools? If no laws are changed, how much would that cost to set up?

  2. I have also noticed that a lot of military veterans have suffered tremendous amount of trauma and don't understand why these assault rifles are normalized in American society. I've read threads on twitter on veterans and how much regret and trauma they face everyday because of the normalized gun and war culture America possesses. America tends to glorify a lot of things, and gun culture seems to be on the top of America's list.

Also, with security measures, I might be mistaken but I believe some D.C. schools have security measures (such as the airport security machines) in their schools. https://wamu.org/story/18/02/28/florida-shooting-washington-area-school-districts-mull-security/. Do you think many states will follow along and prioritize the safety of children in schools nationwide? What other kind of security measures and ideas are being brought upon? Are they as effective?

  3. Gun control are one of the most talked subject in society due to recent events. You would think that will the multiple and recent shooting that’s happening in America, that the government would realize how ineffective the law is about gun. There’s are gaps and loopholes on law of guns. There are several guns shows in America that makes it easier to purchase a gun in which sometime there’s no need for identification to purchases them. Here’s an article that might interest you: http://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/welcome/features/20090923_gun_study/ . Hopefully, the government [Federal and State] can improve gun control so that tragedies [such as school shooting] won’t happen as often as it currently is.
