"Utopia": just an idea out of Sci-fi or truly possible?
The word "Utopian" is one that is rarely if ever used to describe today's society in the world and in America specifically. It is a word that is used to describe something out of an H.G wells book not the current day to day life that we have today. The true definition of "Utopia" is "a place of ideal perfection especially in laws, government, and social conditions".
While this conversation could turn into a rant of listing all the things wrong with America, I'll censor myself instead because complaining without looking for solutions will and never has done anything to make situations better. Instead the focus chosen is the topic of global warming and climate change and how as a country we can help to reduce our own Eco-footprint to strive towards this Utopian idea of current conditions.
Concerning climate "the planet is warming, from North Pole to South Pole. Since 1906, the global average surface temperature has increased between 1.1 and 1.6 degrees Fahrenheit (0.6 to 0.9 degrees Celsius)" as stated by National Geographic . Because of this drastic change, it not only effects the climate but also the quality of the environment and quality of life. The increase of temperature causes the population of animals and organisms to adapt and those who don't might suffer. These also including us as humans.
So what causes global warming and climate change? What have we as humans aided in speeding up this process? and how can we maybe help slow down the process again? The video listed below produced by National Geographic informs the viewer about these changes.
With the increase of "green house gasses", what can we (as America) do to help strive towards this more Utopian-esque quality of life and overall the environment? A few things can be done such as, reducing the use of fossil fuels, increase our use of renewable energies such as water, solar energy and biomass, and to implement a Greenhouse Gas Fee that puts a price on climate change-causing emissions from all energy sources.
While even if these solutions are put to the test, the climate will never be the same because of the damage that has already been done. But as a country we can reduce our own footprint on the ecosystem and make our way towards a "perfect world" and work with what we have.

I think you're onto something quite insightful when you connect a discussion of global warming to Utopia. At its base level, there can be no consideration of a safe environment (let alone a perfect one) if the environment becomes even more unpredictable and destructive for so many people. Just think about the destructive force of hurricanes; with warming, they happen more often and of course peoples' lives are in danger and at some point if humans don't get a handle on their environmental impacts, any discussion of Utopia will be moot. So to your recommendations--how can we reduce our own footprint when the President is dismantling the EPA bit by bit?
ReplyDeleteI think you chose an interesting topic to create your Utopian America. The average idea would be to dismantle the currency system, or rid the world of unnecessary violence, but while these ideas are more about saving humanity, yours is about saving the planet altogether. I think that’s a great idea, but much easier said than done. One of the largest causes is power plants burning to create electricity. Solar panels are a simple fix, but $25,000+ per house is not a simple amount. If the cost to install and the cost to upkeep these solar panels were far cheaper than they are, we would be one step closer to the Utopia you described.
ReplyDeleteThe topic you have decided to discuss is fascinating.
ReplyDeleteClimate should be considered, even though there are some who do not believe in it, because it can impact multiple organisms including us. The video that was added was a great way to support your statement because it explains more about global warming and the effects it can do around us and ourselves. So, instead of focusing on the utopian society, we should be thinking about the well-being of our planet. Here’s an interesting quiz about your lifestyle and how planets would we need if everyone were to live like you: http://www.footprintcalculator.org. Overall, It will be challenging to think about a utopia America if there’s no healthy environment.
